Tips for Writing Strong, Effective Sentences: Improve Revision With These Tips I repeatedly told my students to vary sentence pattern and lengths it doesn't help. Then I decided to instruct them how you can take action. Now I'm instructing you on how to show it. I felt great. I had just taught a wonderful lesson about the importance of writing strong sentences. Students gave me high-fives since they walked on their way. "What did I do wrong?" I cried, as stunned students snickered within my incredulity. Seconds before peppering the category with double-edged sharpened pencils, I had a perception: maybe I should think of a lesson on writing strong sentences and help them learn the way to actually undertake it rather than telling them how important it really is. I position the pencil sharpener away, called my lady, and shared with her I'd be home late. I had work to complete. I had to make a lesson policy for writing effective sentences. After: To improve my timed writing score I should practice timed writing. 2) Use a subordinating conjunction to combine sentences: Before: I thought I did excellent on my timed writing test. My grade was lower than I thought. After: I looked to Bill and asked, "Should we warn Terrance or maybe go?" 4) Add a present participial phrase (which is a phrase starting with a thing that ends in 'ing'). Before: We ran faster than we'd ever run before because the big bear ripped out Terrance's guts featuring its paw. After: Looking on in dismay since the bear ripped out Terrance's guts, we awoke from our startled state and ran. 5) Join two sentences which has a comma and a coordinating conjunction (and, but, for, nor, yet, so) and make up a compound sentence. Before: We knew we did not have to outrun the bear. We had to run a bit faster than Terrance. After: We knew we weren't required to outrun the bear, but we did have to outrun Terrance. 6) Add dialogue: Before: We told Terrance to leave the tent and run. After: I yelled, "Terrance, there exists a grizzly bear beyond your tent! Run!" 7) Start with an ly word: Before: I was sad when I saw Terrance's body strewn through the mountain. After: Sadly, we checked out Terrance's mangled body. 8) Start the sentence with a prepositional phrase: Before: I ran really fast the second I saw Terrance's arm torn off and thrown over the campsite.
